Learn how to play the piano or improve the sound of your singing

Welcome to Noteworthy Chords Piano and Vocal Studio. My name is Christel Meyer and I offer private piano and voice lessons to those desiring to learn or expand their skills out of my Shoreview home. I have a degree in Music Education, with a major in voice and minor in piano. For over twenty-two years, I have been providing private piano and voice lessons to students ranging from 5 years old to adult and look forward to teaching you.

Noteworthy Chords has an upright grand piano and vaulted ceilings give an open feel to the studio which lends a comfortable atmosphere for playing and singing. It is in a my home located on a quiet cul-de-sac. If you would like to come and visit the studio or have questions concerning the studio policy or rates, please contact me to either set up an appointment or have me answer any questions you may have.

Piano Lessons

I believe that it is beneficial for students to learn how to read music. So it is important for them to have a theory book that allows them to learn rhythm, chords, names of notes, dynamics and articulation. It is also important to learn sight reading skills and ear training. The book series that I have found that does a great job of incorporating all of these skills is called Faber and Faber, Adventures in Music. To learn more about this series please refer to the resources page. As students get older, it is good for them to find songs that they really enjoy and I am open to working on special songs, as long as they are at the correct level for the student. Practice makes perfect and is expected as outlined in the studio policy.

Voice Lessons

At the first voice lesson we go over the basics of posture, breathing, warm-ups and checking your range. I then start a series of songs from the Adventures in Singing book. These are folk songs that gradually get tougher and each has its own elements that I like to know each of my students can handle. I also highly encourage students to bring in their own music that they want to work on as well. I listen to how a student sings and identify any problems with articulation, phonation, tone, breathing, volume, and range; and then provide visuals and instruction in how to improve.

I believe anyone can learn how to sing. Some people have to work harder at it than others, but with practice anybody can reach their singing goals. I tailor voice lessons to the goals and needs of each student. This can range from just working on the voice separate from song singing, to helping students work up a song piece for contest or audition for a musical. I’ve worked with a variety of ages, but would suggest waiting with younger kids until they are at least 13 years old—when their voice changes and they can safely develop their vocal cords—to start voice lessons.
